Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Elisabeth (born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria; 24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi, [1] was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898.

The portrait of the Empress impresses on the one hand with its great resemblance to the famous painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, but on the other hand shows strong differences in her ball gown.

Elisabeth (born December 24, 1837, Munich, Bavaria [Germany]—died September 10, 1898, Geneva, Switzerland) was the empress consort of Austria from April 24, 1854, when she married Emperor Franz Joseph. She was also queen of Hungary (crowned June 8, 1867) after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich, or Compromise.
