The Palace of Versailles was the principal residence of the French kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Embellished by several generations of architects, sculptors, decorators and landscape architects, it provided Europe with a model of the ideal royal residence for over a century. It gives access to the palace at 9:30 am and to the show of the Equestrian Academy of Versailles, depending on the day you choose: Saturday at 6 pm or Wednesday and Sunday at 3 pm. From July 6 to August 7, on Wednesdays and Sundays, show is at 5 pm.Additional dates on Saturday 27th of July at 8:30 pm and Tuesday 30th, and Wednesday 31st at 6 pm.

The Palace of Versailles, whose origins date back to the seventeenth century, was successively a hunting lodge, a seat of power and , from the nineteenth century , a museum. With the gardens and the Palaces of Trianon, the park of the Château de Versailles spreads over 800 hectares.

About 16 km southwest of Paris, Château de Versailles was originally built by Louis XIII as a hunting lodge. In 1661, Louis XIV began transforming Versailles into an opulent palace, and during his reign it became the official seat of Royal power.
1. The palace was originally a hunting lodge. The Palace of Versailles had fairly humble beginnings. Louis XIII (1601–1643) bought the land because he loved hunting and built a chateau as a lodge where he loved staying at night if he had no time to go back to Paris or Saint-Germain-en-Laye before dark.
The history of the Palace of Versailles starts at the 17th century. It was first a hunting lodge, then a seat of power, and finally, from the 19th century onwards, a museum. Composed of the Palace, the gardens, the Park, the Trianon estate and several buildings in town, today the Estate of Versailles spreads over more than 800 hectares.
