Set in the summer of 2012 (ah, nostalgia!), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones centers on recent high school graduate Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and his friends Hector (Jorge Diaz) and Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh). A murder happening in the apartment below his is only the beginning of some very strange events for Jesse – which escalate after he and his friends make the classic horror movie blunder of investigating the place where the terrible thing happened.

Jesse finds himself changing and displaying what appear to be superhuman abilities, all while beginning to act darker and more malevolent. It seems that Jesse’s neighbor was involved in some bizarre, macabre things with her own friends, which perhaps accounts for the VHS tapes marked “Katie and Kristi, 1988” in her apartment.

The Marked Ones has been described as a “spinoff” of Paranormal Activity series. This is sorta/kinda true, in that this is the first film to not center around Kristi’s extended family (if you’re reading this, I feel safe noting Paranormal Activity 4 ultimately did tie in, given who the neighbors were in that sequel). Jesse is obviously dealing with people associated with the coven from the rest of the series, but he’s not as directly tied into the events of the previous films.

Still, at the end of the day, if you’d called this movie Paranormal Activity 5, it wouldn’t have felt out of place. As the trailer shows, there’s a brief appearance from Paranormal Activity 2’s Ali (Molly Ephraim), and she’s not the only familiar face from the franchise to pop up by the end. And once more, we’re given little pieces to the increasingly convoluted mythology regarding these witches and what it is they’re trying to accomplish. There is also a very cool extra way in which this film ties into the others that certainly got a big reaction from the crowd I saw it with and is a great payoff for those most familiar with the series.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the fifth film in the franchise -- sixth if you count that Japanese-made Paranormal Activity film a few years back -- and at this point, audience members have had many chances to decide if they enjoy this series or not. While The Marked Ones does have a few differences from the rest of the series, it’s still ...
