He has played leading roles at the National Theatre and the RSC and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role 1986 for his role in The Normal Heart at the Royal Court Theatre.
For that production Paul Jesson, who played Felix, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role. The Normal Heart received its Polish premiere in 1987 at the Polish Theatre in Poznań where it was directed by Grzegorz Mrówczyński .
