  1. Apr 10, 2007 · The theatrical release of Payback, by contrast, was and is silly and vulgar, self-sabotaging, pointlessly vicious, and perversely jaunty. It is very much like--deliberately like--the Lethal Weapon series. The Director s Cut makes clear that s not at all what Helgeland had in mind.

  4. Reddit likes the Director's Cut because downer endings are considered rare and edgy around here. Mel Gibson's version (1999) is way more satisfying to me. Theatrical by a mile. Prefer the theatrical, but I saw it about a hundred times before the director's cut was released. Both are very well made.

  5. Apr 10, 2007 · Let me say right off that just because the title of the review says "Not the same movie!" doesn't mean that I didn't like it. Payback is one of my top ten favorite movies. I figured a "director's cut" version could only mean "that movie, plus some stuff that was left out of the theatrical release" - that's what most director's cut versions are.

  6. This is actually a good analogy. Payback – is dark, harsh tones, and to me, a more "figure it out" type of movie. Payback: Strait up – is lighter, more natural colors, less figure it out, more guide you through. I prefer the first 1999 release much better from a Movie standpoint. The re-release is poorly done re-shoot.

Myhre reshot 30% of the film, including a quite different and lighter ending. Helgelands director’s cut is available in the US on Blu-ray and DVD as Straight Up: The Director’s Cut.
