Sep 25, 2015 · Director Brian Helgeland was given the chance to retool the movie but declined, and production designer John Myhre was given a go at it. Myhre reshot 30% of the film, including a quite different and lighter ending. Helgelands director’s cut is available in the US on Blu-ray and DVD as Straight Up: The Director’s Cut.

If you enjoyed the theatrical then do yourself a favor and give this one a spin—it’s wholly different, but it’s a much tighter, more satisfying story with a much less “happy ending.”
Apr 10, 2007 · The theatrical release of Payback, by contrast, was and is silly and vulgar, self-sabotaging, pointlessly vicious, and perversely jaunty. It is very much like--deliberately like--the Lethal Weapon series. The Director s Cut makes clear that s not at all what Helgeland had in mind.
