At peak bloom, The Arb’s garden holds around 800 peonies and over 10,000 flowers. But there is even more to enjoy – the 34-acre park features three miles of trails and multiple conservatories with breathtaking views.

The W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden is near the Washington Heights entrance to Nichols Arboretum (1610 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor). I was expecting a longer walk from the entrance to the peony garden. I’m just lucky to have picked the right entrance on our first visit.
May 27, 2024 · The peony garden is starting to take off, with the herbaceous peony plants sprouting vigorously, ranging in height from around 8 inches to knee-high. These lush plants are thriving and developing well, preparing for their stunning blooms.
The garden's nearly 800 plants produce up to 10,000 flowers at peak bloom. It's believed to be the largest collection of heirloom herbaceous peonies in North America. Recent plantings of tree peonies bloom earlier than the herbaceous varieties, extending the blooming season another two to three weeks.
