May 6, 2024. While the tree peonies are starting to open, most of the herbaceous peonies are still closed and will remain so for another few weeks. The warm weather has likely pushed the mass bloom up a little, but exactly when it will happen is still a bit of a guessing game.
The W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden at Nichols Arboretum is one of the world’s premiere collections. The garden holds nearly 800 peonies and over 10,000 flowers at peak bloom. Herbaceous peonies in southeast Michigan bloom from approximately Memorial Day to mid-June, depending on the weather.
ANN ARBOR—Following a pandemic year in which visitors were asked to stay away, the nearly century-old peony garden in the University of Michigan’s Nichols Arboretum welcomed them back with a banner bloom year.
May 20, 2021 · The garden, begun in 1922 with a gift of peony plants from U-M alumnus W.E. Upjohn, celebrates its 99th year of bloom from about Memorial Day through mid-June, weather depending. The garden’s nearly 800 plants produce up to 10,000 flowers at peak bloom.
