Maybe Pete's "trips to rehab" were John's way of making him go take a time-out after being especially naughty. The fact that John (and Kevin) hadn't been on the show for awhile is telling. Maybe he had enough of Pete and couldn't stomach coming into his home and pretending. But with Pete being a co-owner he couldn't just fire him.
