Peter Alexander Rupert Carington, 6th Baron Carrington, Baron Carington of Upton, KG, GCMG, CH, MC, PC, DL (6 June 1919 – 9 July 2018), was a British Conservative Party politician and hereditary peer who served as Defence Secretary from 1970 to 1974, Foreign Secretary from 1979 to 1982, Chairman of the General Electric Company from 1983 to 1984, and Secretary General of NATO from 1984 to 1988.

LORD CARRINGTON. Known for his role in the Falklands War when he was British Foreign Secretary, Peter Alexander Rupert Carington, 6th Baron Carrington came to the helm of the North Atlantic Alliance on 25 June 1984. Carrington was particularly refined, cultivated and personable. He knew the names of all his staff and treated them like family.
Biography. Peter Carrington was born in Chelsea on 6 June 1919, the only son of the 5th Baron Carrington and Sibyl Colville. He was educated at Eton and Sandhurst, and after his father’s death in 1938 he succeeded his father as the 6th Baron when he was just 19 years old.
