Peter van Pels was also sent back to the Sanitätslager of the Mauthausen main camp, deathly ill, on 11 April 1945. According to the Netherlands Red Cross, which relied on a list prepared by the US Army, Peter van Pels died on the day of the liberation of Mauthausen, 5 May 1945.
