It is Aberdeenshire's biggest settlement, with a population of 18,537 at the 2011 Census. It is the biggest fishing port in the United Kingdom for total landings by UK vessels, according to a 2019 survey.

Peterhead has the distinction of being the most easterly point in mainland Scotland, though nearby Boddam runs it close. Much of the town is built on an east-pointing peninsula defined by the narrow estuary of the River Ugie to the north and Peterhead Bay to the south.

Peterhead began their competitive life nine years later in 1900, joining the Aberdeenshire Football Association. With just six teams competing, it was a rather short season however. They remained in the Aberdeenshire League until 1931 when they joined the Highland Football League.
