Origins. The Kataeb party was established on November 5, 1936 [6] as a Maronite paramilitary youth organization by Pierre Gemayel who modeled the party after Spanish Falange and Italian Fascist parties [7] [8] he had observed as an Olympic athlete during the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, then Nazi Germany.

The Phalanges Party was founded as a response to the rise of “ unionist ” calls among Muslims and some Christian groups in Lebanon who sought the unity of Lebanon with either Syria or another Arab country as part of a larger Arab nation.
