Philip I, also called Philip The Handsome, was the first King of Castile from the House of Habsburg. He was born to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and his first wife Mary, the Duchess of Burgundy. The latter reigned many territories of the Duchy of Burgundy and the Low Countries.
Philip was the son of Emperor Maximilian I. He was married to the Spanish infanta Juana (Joan) in a double wedding in order to seal the alliance against France. Thanks to a series of strokes of Habsburg luck, Philip, who was given the epithet of ‘the Fair’, became King of Castile.
