    • 1. the capital of Cambodia, a port at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap Rivers; population 1,438,300 (est. 2009). It became the capital of a Khmer kingdom in the mid 15th century. Between 1975 and 1979 the Khmer Rouge forced a great many of its population (then 2.5 million) to leave the city and resettle in the country.
