Picard is a Romance language spoken in the northern France and neighbouring parts of Belgium by about 700,000 people. Picard is classified as one of the langues d'oïl, like French, and belongs to the Gallo-Roman branch of Romance languages.
It is one of the langues d'oïl. The language is often called ch'ti or ch'timi in most of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Rouchi near Valenciennes, Roubaignot near Roubaix and patois in Picardy, as well as Picard everywhere. In 1998, there were around 700,000 people who spoke Picard as a first language.
However, Picard was not able to compete with French to become the interregional literary language and was slowly reduced to the status of a regional language. A more recent body of Picard literature, written during the last two centuries, also exists. Modern written Picard is generally a transcription of the spoken language.
