Sep 10, 2021 · Who Was Vashti in the Bible? From the citadel of Susa, a Persian king by the name of Xerxes (or Ahasuerus) ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush. The Bible doesn’t tell us how long Xerxes' first wife, the beautiful Queen Vashti, sat by his side.
This painting is sometimes listed as ‘Vashti’, the queen who refused to parade before her drunken husband’s friends. She was banished from the King’s presence forever, and became a forgotten woman, lodged in a back room of the royal harem.

Each woman had unique qualities, yet their stories are intertwined. Scripture shares how Vashti and Esther were both queens to the same king at different times.

The Queen of Ahasuerus (Xerxes I, c. 485-465) ( Esth 1:9-19; 2:1, 4, 17) who refused to exhibit her beauty to his lords on the seventh day of a feast. The king banished her and made an edict ( Esth 1:22) that each man should be lord over his own house. Her deposition lead to the selection of Esther (q.v.) as Ahasuerus’ queen.
