Plattsmouth, city, seat (1855) of Cass county, eastern Nebraska, U.S., near the confluence of the Platte and Missouri rivers, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Omaha. Oto and Omaha Indians were early inhabitants. French explorers visited the area in 1730, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped there in 1804.

Sarpy County has served as the springboard for Nebraska's settlement and expansion. The county is named for Colonel Peter Sarpy, an early fur trader at Fontenelle's Post in the Bellevue area in the 1840s. He also had Sarpy's post in what became Decatur; Sarpy died in Plattsmouth in 1865.

On October 26, 1854 the Plattsmouth Town Company was established and the city was mapped out by Surveyor O.W. Tyson. By an act of the Territorial Legislature, the town was approved in March 14, 1855. The town’s name was derived from the fact that the mouth of the Platte River emptied into the Missouri River near the town site.
