Added to NRHP. August 30, 1974. The National Monument to the Forefathers, formerly known as the Pilgrim Monument, [1] commemorates the Mayflower Pilgrims. Dedicated on August 1, 1889, it honors their ideals as later generally embraced by the United States. It is thought to be the world's largest solid granite monument.
Plymouth Rock. Thousands of visitors come each year to look at this weathered granite ball and consider what it was like for the Pilgrims who stepped ashore on a foreign land in the fall of 1620. In firsthand accounts of the fledgling colony there's no mention of a granite rock, but the story gained popularity during colonial times.
The Arrival of the Pilgrims. The story of Plymouth Rock begins in 1620 when a group of English Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower sought religious freedom in the New World. Contrary to popular belief, Plymouth Rock was not the first land they stepped upon. Instead, they initially set foot on Cape Cod before sailing to Plymouth Harbor.
