Poison ivy has compound leaves; each leaf is composed of three leaflets. In each set of leaflets, the middle leaflet has a longer stem than the two side leaflets. A sticky chemical, urushiol oil, is quickly absorbed by the skin. The rash that results is actually a form of allergic contact dermatitis called Rhus dermatitis.
