   What is the Pompidou Group?

   • The brainchild of the late former French President Georges Pompidou, the Pompidou Group was formed in 1971 in an effort to better understand and tackle the growing drug problems in Europe. In 1980 the Group was incorporated into the institutional framework of the Council of Europe as an inter-governmental body.

   • The original statute of the Pompidou Group was adopted in 1980. As an enlarged partial agreement of the Council of Europe, the Pompidou Group is open to the participation of member States of the Organisation, which may join it by simple notification to the Secretary General, and to non-member States which share the values of the Council of Europe.
