Recreates the Middle Ages fairly authentically. The peasants are dirty and don’t have immaculate brilliant white teeth and perfect hair. The savagery, evil, and the misery aren't toned down either. Good cast, great score, and the cinematography and lighting look a lot more expensive that most Hollywood blockbusters. 10 likes. Review by André

Mar 20, 2016 · The Verdict. The movie is good. The child actors portraying Joan and her brothers gave strong performances and were captivating onscreen. A good chunk of the movie is spent on the early part of Joan’s life, so they take up quite a bit of screen time, but their performances are solid.
Pope Joan (2009) tells the story of Johanna, a woman whose extraordinary life in the ninth century led her to disguise herself as a man and become Pope. It was based on Donna Woolfolk Cross’ 1996 novel Pope Joan, which was a bestseller. Despite being in English, the film was produced in Germany with a limited release around the world.
