Once a term used somewhat interchangeably with punk rock, new wave eventually expanded to include almost any quirky yet mainstream pop/rock form of the first half of the decade.
A whole wide range of musical acts have been categorized under the genre of new wave with bands who have also been labelled punk, ska, synthpop, post-punk, etc. at some stage experimenting with this genre. The late 70's, early 80's was a truly great period for music.
