The Commission on Presidential Debates modified the format of this debate stating that it would be held "virtually" because of concerns about public health due to President Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis.
In 2012 and 2016, the CPD adopted a significantly different format for the first and last presidential debates: those two debates were divided into six 15-minute segments, during each of which the candidates discussed one major issue facing the country.
