Adelheid was born the second daughter of Ernst I, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg by his wife Princess Feodora of Leiningen, who was the older, maternal half-sister of the British Queen Victoria. Consequently, Adelheid was Queen Victoria's half-niece. She was nicknamed "Ada" by her family.
Feodora was Queen Victoria's half-sister from their mother's first marriage and the two were very close. Feodora had married Ernest, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, in 1828 and she and Adelaide were in England for the Queen's marriage.
