The coreopsis flower (tickseed) is a long-blooming perennial that flowers from early summer until fall frost. Planted in fall or spring, this deer-resistant native is beloved by bees and butterflies. Here’s how to plant this fan favorite—as well as deadhead coreopsis and other growing tips.
Many sites recommend cutting coreopsis almost to the ground in the autumn. While deciding whether or not to prune back is essentially a personal choice, it isn’t always the healthiest option for the plant. Allowing dead growth to remain in situ over the winter provides some insulation for the roots.
If so, you can encourage more blooms and a late autumn bloom with a little dramatic pruning. Prune off several inches of your coreopsis plants in a uniform manner. This will leave you with attractive foliage color for a while, but it won’t be long before your plants produce more buds and begin to bloom again.
Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’ is a particularly lovely cultivar, bearing pale yellow flowers with a darker centre, from June to September. Perfect for growing at the front of sunny borders or as part of a container display, it has a compact habit and feathery, fern-like foliage.
