Outside of crafting, Purple Gems can also be obtained by mining Ancient Statues, destroying Broken Clockworks, opening Ornate Chests, or as a drop from both variants of the Clockwork Bishop.

Varg farm is the way to go, and it requires exactly 7 gems to setup (6 if you are already winona) 1 for shadow manipulator, 2 for telelocator staff, 3 for telelocator focus, 1 for switching characters. Each time you get 3 more purple gems you can add a varg to the farm to make it better

You can refine a purple gem with a blue and red one in the magic tab. I'm on day 150+ and we have like 20-30 blue and red gems bc of the constant hound attacks (blue hounds and red hounds drop red and blue gems so we have a lot of them). To me, this is the easiest method of obtaining purple gems.
