At 18, the young trumpeter won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, but dropped out abruptly when he received an offer to go on the road with bandleader Lionel Hampton. The stint with Hampton led to work as a freelance arranger.
Born in Chicago in 1933, Jones grew up in Seattle where he began making music playing trumpet and singing in a gospel choir at the age 12. His first band was formed with his friend, Ray Charles, who was two years older, when both were in their teens.
Quincy Jones’s enormous success in the 1980s was the culmination of an extraordinary career. A classically trained musician who grew up in Seattle, Washington, he was a gospel singer at age 12, a jazz arranger in New York City in his early 20s, and musical director of Barclay Records in France soon.
