- "Ragtime" may have some flaws, but overall it's an impressive recreation of NYC of the earliest years of the 20th century, and tells a VERY compelling series of stories. Scripted by Michael Weller, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow, it has an eclectic cast, just FULL of familiar faces, that bring life to a colourful array of characters.

Things coalesce when a racist fire chief (Kenneth McMillan) pushes Walker over the edge. A simplistic reading based on the actor’s approach shows him to be a stubborn man.
Vincent Canby gave the film a more mixed review, praising the performances and cinematography but criticizing Forman's narrative choices that created an unclear sense of time and prioritized certain storylines at the cost of others: "[Ragtime] is sorrowful, funny and beautiful. It is also, finally, very unsatisfactory."
