Mar 31, 2020 · Ransom Eli Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897, but sold it to an investor, Samuel L. Smith, within two years. Disagreements between the two persuaded Olds to leave the successful venture in 1904 and cash out his stock. He subsequently established the R.E. Olds Company that produced the popular REO lines of automobiles and trucks.

At the closing of the 1800s, Ransom got to tinkering with steam-powered cars, he claimed to have built his first steam-powered car in 1884. In 1885, Ransom Olds became a partner in his father's machine shop firm, which became a leading manufacturer of gas-heated steam engines. In 1886, he received his first patent for a gasoline-powered car.
At the end of 1901 Olds had produced 425 Curved Dashes in the temporary foundry assembly plant. He also had two new plants ready to make cars at the unheard of rate of 20 cars/day in each location. Volumes would soar to over 4,000 cars per year. The Curved Dash became the most popular car in the United States with nearly 40% of the car market.
He sold his company in 1899 and relocated from Lansing to Detroit, renaming his company the Olds Motor Works. In 1901, Ransom designed the legendary Curved Dash Oldsmobile, the first commercially successful car mass-produced on an assembly line in the U.S.
