North Carolina had been under Republican trifecta control after Governor Pat McCrory (R) assumed office in 2013 and became the state's first Republican governor in 20 years. This represented a shift in partisan control for the state, which had been under Democratictrifecta control in 2010. McCrory sought a second term in office.
