Rhythm. Rhythm in music consists of patterns of long and short durations of pitches and silences. These patterns are heard in relation to the meter of the music. Rhythm and meter are two different, but interconnected aspects of music. The relationship between rhythm and meter will become clear through exploring rhythm, meter, and beaming in Unit 1.
Ostinato Music Definition. Ostinato (plural – ostinati or ostinatos) is an Italian word meaning obstinate or persistent and is used in music to describe a musical phrase or rhythm that is repeated persistently. The repeated pattern could be a melody, a figure in the bass – called a basso ostinato or simply a repeated rhythmic idea.
1.2 The beat. Central to both rhythm and meter is a musical characteristic referred to as the beat. A periodic—that is, regularly occurring—pulse that underlies a piece of music, the beat is something we have all experienced while listening.
