Jul 31, 2020 · Richard Wilson was born on 1st August 1713 or 1714 in Penegoes, Powys, North Wales, the third son of its rector. Classically educated at home, he grew up to become the leading British landscapist of his generation and one of the great artistic pioneers of the eighteenth century.
Painting in Italy and afterwards in Britain, he was the first major British painter to concentrate on landscape. He composed well, but saw and rendered only the general effects of nature, thereby creating a personal, ideal style influenced by Claude Lorrain and the Dutch landscape tradition.
