Apr 16, 2024 · Richard Wilson (born August 1, 1713 or 1714, Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, Wales—died May 11, 1782, Colomendy Hall, near Llanferres, Denbighshire [now Clwyd]) was one of the earliest major British landscape painters, whose works combine a mood of classical serenity with picturesque effects.
He developed a style derived from the classical landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Gaspar Dughet. Returning to London in 1757, Wilson set up an impressive studio in the Piazza in Covent Garden, producing classicised versions of the English landscape which became fashionable among the gentry and aristocracy.
