Henry VII was fond of Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. When a fire accidentally destroyed his manor in Sheen in 1497 he built a palace there and re-named it Richmond in 1501. Many people assume that the folk song "Lass of Richmond Hill" refers to Richmond upon Thames, but it originated in the Yorkshire Richmond.

Jun 17, 2020 · Built on the site of the old medieval palace of Sheen, Richmond Palace was a Royal residence from as early as the 1200s. Sadly, it was destroyed by a fire in 1499. But in true Royal style, it was rebuilt as an even grander palace by 1510, and renamed after the King's earldom of Richmond in Yorkshire.

Richmond was his principal residence, but the palace was destroyed by fire in 1497, to be then rebuilt by Henry VII. Henry VII died at Richmond in 1509 and although Henry VIII took possession of the palace he did not make so much use of it as his father, preferring Whitehall and Hampton Court Palaces.
