One of her earliest memories of the move to Phoenix is of racing go-karts in the desert. "When we first came, that's what we found to do," she says. "It seemed like we drove out way into the desert, which is probably all houses now. I was very small so Curt the Clown might let me get in the car after everybody else was done racing. But I was really...

The Budweiser Clydesdalesand the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile would show up at the little shopping plaza by her home. "I can't figure out why these things were in Phoenix," she says, with a laugh. "There would be a little carnival that would come to the little mall a couple times a year with the rides and the rocket," Jones recalls. "And at that mall, ...

Jones loved to swim at Nelson's Pool near 19th Avenue and Turney. "A pool is necessary to life in the desert," she says. "You couldn't survive without it back then. There wasn't a lot of air conditioning. There were fans, you know." Her family would go to the pool at Washington High School in the summer but she liked Nelson's pool better. It was sm...

Jones loved horses as a child. "There were two horseback riding places," she recalls. "One was $1.25. And the other was $1.50." They often would say Jones was too little to ride. "But my mother would take me there anyway," she says. "And we'd sit just so I could be near the horses because I loved them so much." Sometimes, her mother could persuade ...

Karen Womack (later Karen Vold) was a 1978 inductee to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame for trick riding. Jones took lessons at Womack's riding stable. "They also had a ram with big horns that was the mascot for Washington High," Jones says. "I'm not sure how my mother knew this lady. But we would drive over there and she'd go in and si...

A lot of Jones' favorite childhood memories are tied to Christown Spectrum Mall, including the Miracle Mile delicatessen. Her parents were from Chicago, Jones says. "And so they had a taste for delicatessen food. And this is where they loved to go eat brisket on an onion roll and pastrami and things they didn't sell at most places." The brisket san...

Another vivid memory of life at Christown Mall revolved around the statue of Ferdinand the Bull out front. "I would climb on top of the bull and rest my head and tell him everything would be OK," she says. "The other bulls didn't like him because he was just a peaceful bull. And I really related to that. So I'd just hug him. I didn't like to leave ...

Wick's Market was at the end of Orangewood Avenue right at the Black Canyon Freeway. "I conquered the bubblegum machine there," Jones says, with a laugh. "I could with a penny, sometimes just by shaking it, get as many rings as I wanted. That was a magic thing indeed."

"Alice Cooper was in a band in Phoenix called the Nazz," Jones says. "And the drummer was John Speer, who lived two doors from my cousin." The Nazz would rehearse at the Speer's house on Dunlap Avenue. "I have very clear memories of a couple of us kids, it's like 'To Kill a Mockingbird' now, looking in the windows, watching what would become Alice ...
