Mar 12, 2004 · "Secret Window" is somewhere in the middle of that range storywise, and toward the top in Depp's performance. And we must not be ungrateful for "Silver Bullet," which I awarded three stars because it was "either the worst movie ever made from a Stephen King story, or the funniest," and you know what side of that I'm gonna come down on.
This movie should be paying huge debts to much better psychological thrillers like PSYCHO or MISERY (coincidentally, the latter is another Stephen King book adaptation), but nevertheless, SECRET WINDOW is creepy, disturbing and haunting. Not to mention it benefits from a strong performance from Johnny Depp. 60 out of 72 found this helpful.

In the wake of Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp’s box-office clout is as high as ever. So is his appeal among teens. That’s too bad, because Secret Window will attract young fans, yet pushes violence and language about as far as it can and still avoid an R rating. For example, I’ve reviewed numerous films in which characters have been stabbed in the head.
Johnny Depp almost saves the day and, at least, keeps you entertained as we watch the battle of wills between Mort and his nemesis John Shooter. John Turturro, with his southern twang and stern, unrelenting demeanor, is a good foil for Depp. The scenes between these two actors reps some of the best bits in “Secret Windows.”

"Secret Window" is a moody, Hitchcockian thriller with a major story twist. Pacing is slow. There's lots of waiting for something to happen, which enhances a sense of foreboding. And Depp's performance is terrific.
