  1. To say there's no reason for this movie to exist would be to both tell a lie and try to obfuscate a sad truth. How to deal with the object as it exists is a more wearisome task. I don't demand that my futuristic dystopian shoot-em-ups come with the added value of misanthropic and coruscating satire, as the original "Robocop" did.

The original Robocop wowed moviegoers back in 1987 with its heady blend of hardcore violence, state-of-the-art special effects, and cutting social satire, all wrapped in the hugely entertaining tale of a police officer who is fatally wounded in the line-of-duty and reborn “part-man, part machine, all cop.”

The film was so far ahead of its time that it's never felt like it needed a reboot, but this is 21st century Hollywood, and the remake has inevitably arrived, directed by Jose Padilha and starring up-and-comer Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, the policeman-turned-tin man.

Edging us into the future, Robocop take place in 2028, when drones have become fundamental to U.S. foreign policy, with ED-208s – essentially robotic foot soldiers – patrolling war-torn states in the name of Freedom.

But thanks to a Senate bill, those same drones aren’t allowed on the streets of America, with politicians worried that the law change would lead to robots having authority over man. Which is a billion-dollar problem for Raymond Sellars, boss of OmniCorp, the world’s leading robot defence company. Realising that Americans want a product they can love and a figure they can rally behind, he pledges to “put a man inside a machine”.

So while Padilha and his team are to be admired for bringing the concept up-to-date and addressing very real concerns about drones, robotics, and automated warfare, they’ve taken much of the fun out of the concept, making for a po-faced and ultimately somewhat forgettable Robocop movie.

  3. First off, Robocop 2014 is a much broader, more family-friendly film. Gone is the extreme, in-your-face violence and criminal depravity that worked so well in the original which was intended to disturb viewers on an emotional level (Veerhoven is king of cinematic satire).
