Ellen was born in 1958. By 1990, she was married to Alex Murphy and together they had a son, James. The Murphys were a happy family that resided at 548 Primrose Lane in Detroit until Alex was killed in the line of duty by Clarence Boddicker and his gang.
Life as a widow
Following Alex's funeral, Ellen and James moved away to "start over," but remained in the Detroit area. Unknown to them, Alex's remains were used in the construction of the cyborg police officer, RoboCop. At one point, RoboCop returned to his former house, which was now unoccupied and for sale.
