The Gates of Hell. The Gates of Hell ( French: La Porte de l'Enfer) is a monumental bronze sculptural group work by French artist Auguste Rodin that depicts a scene from the Inferno, the first section of Dante Alighieri 's Divine Comedy. It stands at 6 metres high, 4 metres wide and 1 metre deep (19.7×13.1×3.3 ft) and contains 180 figures.

Gerald Cantor and his wife, Iris, convened a team of experts to attempt the first-ever bronze casting of The Gates of Hell using the painstaking "lost wax" method that Rodin himself had favored. The finished piece would stand 21 feet high and 12 feet wide, and weigh eight tons.

Sep 26, 2006 · During Rodin s lifetime, The Gates was exhibited only once, in plaster. In 1977, Rodin s intention of casting the plaster in bronze was fulfilled when American art collector and financier B. Gerald Cantor and his wife, Iris, commissioned a casting of the monumental work using the traditional and painstaking lost-wax process.

This is a very interesting film! It tells the remarkable story of Rodin, France's great sculptor, and of his contribution to sculpture. Then it shows how his masterpiece THE GATES OF HELL was cast. I am so glad I watched it. I was especially interested in the use of vintage photographs showing the artist in his studio.
