The Descent from the Cross (or Deposition of Christ, or Descent of Christ from the Cross, or in Flemish Kruisafneming) is a panel painting by the Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden created c. 1435, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. The crucified Christ is lowered from the cross, his lifeless body held by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus .
The Deposition. This is the oldest work that with some degree of certainty may be attributed to Rogier van der Weyden; the master never signed his work. If this is the case, it is probably also his most impressive work. As an altarpiece it was intended for a chapel in Leuven, but fell into Spanish hands in the 16th century.

In some medieval paintings, the skull of Adam is shown buried below the cross of Jesus. The skull in Van der Weyden's Deposition is in the wrong place; hence, I think it is safer to say that the artist puts the skull here because Golgatha is referred to as "the place of the skull" in Matt. 33:27.
