The Molossus was the superior dog on the battlefield and could make short work of most European breeds. That changed when the Romans invaded Britannia (Britain) in 43 A.D. and encountered the Celt’s Pugnaces Britanniae – the monstrous ancestor of the English Mastiff.
Intriguingly they were known from the Romans to live in a region (the Pontic-Caspian Steppe) about 700 km to the north of the region where the Assyrians once lived. Again, any canine connections are speculative. The term “Mastiff” has an unclear origin and is meant to have evolved from Anglo-Saxon term “masty”, which means “powerful”.
