LeNoire was born Rosetta Olive Burton on August 8, 1911, in the New York City neighborhood of Hell ’ s Kitchen. Her father, Harold Charles Burton, hailed from the French West Indies and was one of the first African Americans in New York State to become a licensed plumber and electrical engineer.
