Any route of drug administration other than oral is a parenteral route (topical dosage forms are considered separately). The four main parenteral routes of drug administration are intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SC), and intra-articular (IA), and in all cases the drug is usually administered via a hollow needle.
The IV route of administration is the fastest, most effective drug delivery method, and the most common parenteral administration route. It is thus used when immediate effect is required, or when it is important to bypass first-pass metabolism and/or breakdown in the gut, for example with fragile or very expensive molecules.
