Roy Acuff was an American vocalist, songwriter, and fiddle player, called the “King of Country Music,” who in the mid-1930s reasserted the mournful musical traditions of Southeastern rural whites and became a national radio star on the “Grand Ole Opry” broadcasts.
Roy Acuff helped intensify the star system at the Grand Ole Opry and remained the show’s leading personality until his death. In addition, he co-founded Acuff-Rose Publications, thus laying an important cornerstone of the Nashville music industry.
