  8. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was born on May 7, 1927, in Cologne, to a Polish-born father and German-born mother. Her brother, Siegbert (b. 1925), studied at Cambridge University and later became a professor of German literature at Oxford University. The family emigrated to Britain in 1939 and attained British citizenship in 1948.
