Sønderborg ( Danish pronunciation: [ˈsønɐˌpɒˀ]; German: Sonderburg [ˈzɔndɐbʊʁk] ⓘ) is a Danish town in the Region of Southern Denmark. It is the main town and the administrative seat of Sønderborg Municipality (Kommune). The town has a population of 28,137 (1 January 2023), [1] in a municipality of 74,380.
It was founded in the mid-13th century around Sønderborg Castle and chartered in 1461. King Christian II was a prisoner at the castle 1532–49. The city was razed in 1864 during a Prussian assault on Danish.

Sønderborg Castle began probably as a fortified tower constructed by Valdemar the Great in 1158, built on an islet in Als Strait ( Als Sund) that later was connected to the island of Als. As it lies to the south of the isle of Als, it was named Sønderborg, literally "southern fortress" (compare English "Sudbury").
