Jan 22, 2012 · A sci-fi romance film that is humble but not slight. The actual time-travel is of absolutely no importance. It's actually most impressive how Safety Not Guaranteed manages to stay grounded in spite of its sci-fi speak and its overtly funny characters. The script keeps it all based enough in reality even when the actors start acting silly.
The ending was complete enough for me as well, because there seemed to just be a tone of, everything is going to be alright. Maybe they'll go back and successfully do whatever they wanted to do in the past. Maybe they'll decide they don't need to make changes because they're looking at life differently now. Whatever.

With the rather high rating it gets on IMDB, I thought this movie was absolutely awful. Comedies are supposed to make me laugh, right. This movie did NOT make me laugh, not once. I also absolutely disliked that rather 'crazy' lead, who wants to use the time machine. Also, I felt the payoff to the movie was incredibly weak.
SPOILERS My dad watched Safety Not Guaranteed the other day and he was surprised that the device worked at the end and claimed that the first time he saw it on DVD it had a different ending. We looked it up and the ending was indeed changed - but was it ever released at the movies or on DVD with the original ending where it failed to work?
If you saw one of the very early versions of the film, it was a different ending. The new ending is significantly better. Here is a quote from Mark Duplass about changing endings.
