Sam was born in North Carolina, but raised in Newnan. He studied History with a minor in English at the University of West Georgia. He is registered by the Department of Agriculture in Household Pest Control and Wood Destroying Organisms.

He was the grandson of explorer and Missouri governor, General William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
