     Sounds like you need a status on the inventory table. For example, a record for an arbitrary tool can have a status field that is a foreign key in the "Statuses" table. The Statuses table could look like this:

     ID Description-----------------------1 Available2 In Use3 Broken

     ... etc.

     Your Inventory table could look like this:

     id status_id description-------------------------------------1 2 Hammer2 1 Hammer3 3 Hammer4 1 Saw5 3 Saw

     Then, when you calculate inventory, only show records where a tool has a status of "1" for Available. You could also run queries for management to show how many tools are "Broken". Plan for eventually deleting these records once the broken tools are accounted for properly, or, keep them for historical data purposes.

     At all costs, avoid creating separate tables for the disposition of any entity in the database. Use a "flag" field (i.e. status_id), so you can add new statuses to an application without needed to infinitely add new tables.

     I have seen both approaches at my current company and would definitely lean towards the first (calculating totals based on stock transactions).

     If you are only storing a total quantity in a field somewhere, you have no idea how you arrived at that number. There is no transactional history and you can end up with problems.

     The last system I wrote tracks stock by storing each transaction as a record with a positive or negative quantity. I have found it works very well.

     It depends, inventory systems are about far more than just counting items. For example, for accounting purposes, you might need to know accounting value of inventory based on FIFO (First-in-First-out) model. That can't be calculated by simple "totaling inventory received - total of inventory sold" formula. But their model might calculate this easily, because they modify accounting value as they go. I don't want to go into details because this is not programming issue but if they swear by it, maybe you didn't understand fully all their requirements they have to accommodate.

     Don't store multiple values in one column in a relational database - it's generally considered bad practice.

     It would be better to have two tables, one with a product name and product ID, and another for variations (having columns variation_id, product_id, size, colour, quantity). The product_id column in the variation table will be a foreign key to the product table.

     one way to do it is to create a 1:N mapping between bulk objects and their contents:

     create table bulk_item ( bulk_product_id integer not null, item_product_id integer not null, qty integer not null, primary key(bulk_product_id, item_product_id), foreign key(bulk_product_id) references product(sku), foreign key(item_product_id) references product(sku));

     A comma-separated list is certainly fine (it might make it harder to do certain queries such as find all bulk objects that contain this SKU etc...).

     I was able to make a good structure: My products and positions are the same but I created a stock table like:

     id | product_id | amount | parent_id | position_id===================================================== 1 | 1013 | 1000 | 4 | 1 2 | 1013 | 1000 | 4 | 1 3 | 1014 | 500 | 4 | 1 4 | 1234 | NULL | NULL | 1

     The 1234 (random id) is a box that contains 2000 metal and 500 wood. I dont save this box in the product table.

     When I scan the box with id 3, I perform a recursive cte query:

     with recursive bom as ( select *, 1 as level from testing.stock where id = '4' #scanned id union all select c.*, p.level + 1 from testing.stock c join bom p on c.parent_id = p.id)select product_id as product, sum(amount), position_idfrom bom bleft join testing.product pd on b.product_id = pd.idwhere pd.id is not nullgroup by product_id, position_id

     which returns:

     sum | product | position2000 | 1013 | 3500 | 1014 | 3-

     to get by position I just run a variation of the above query. To perform an update I get the Ids inside that box and run a

     update testing.stock set position = '2' where id in (#variation of above query)-

     I hope this helps someone. This works for N packaging level
